Neither the music nor the music-making could be any more beautiful. Don’t expect a staid performance of Bach’s masterpieces because The Academy of Ancient Music, among the world’s leading period-instrument orchestras, is incapable of giving one.
“Nothing was taken for granted,” enthused the Chicago Tribune. “Every turn of phrase was treated as if the ink were still wet on the page.” Newly appointed music director Richard Egarr does “what few conductors seem able to do, or even try,” wrote The Oregonian. “He breached the wall between audience and performer. His delight became our delight. His fancies took our fancy.”
