Thursday, April 5, 6:30pm / Pre-performance discussion with Dave Pietro.
He will focus the discussion on Hancher's commission of a new set of five songs called Iowa Memoirs, inspired by his trips to various parts of the state.
2nd floor gallery, Englert Theatre (limited seating)
Swing along with Dave Pietro, whose warm tone and lyrical sensibility have garnered him critical accolades as "a radiant soloist" (Jazz Educators Journal) possessing "one of the most appealing alto sounds in jazz" (Jazz Times Magazine). This in-demand musician has performed in more than 30 countries, as well as alongside legends like Toshiko Akiyoshi, Ray Charles, Harry Connick Jr., Maynard Ferguson, and The Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. His crisp, lively compositions seep with harmonic and rhythmic complexity, as well as a sense of creative daring. The concert is just part of the story, however, as Pietro will work with high school musicians across the state in a three-week residency.
