When a young African-American girl approached Sphinx Chamber Orchestra violinist
Shelby Harris and whispered, "I didn't know African-Americans played the violin," Harris
whispered back, "I didn't know that either when I was a kid." The musician recalls this as one of the most poignant moments of her 11-year career with the Sphinx Virtuosi, a conductorless ensemble of top alumni soloists of the national Sphinx Competition for Black and Latino string players. The program, "Music of the Americas," will feature compositions by Astor Piazzolla, Osvaldo Golijov, Alberto Ginastera, and others. The performance will also feature the Catalyst Quartet, comprised of the Sphinx Performance Academy's principal faculty.
