Stew & The Negro Problem
Thursday, February 2, 7:30 pm —The Englert Theatre
Hancher Commission
Take biting social satire and mix with psychedelic pop; add sly humor, sophisticated wordplay, and a heaping dose of theatricality; top it off with genuine emotional resonance, and you may come close to Stew & The Negro Problem's acclaimed blend of "genre-defying rock-pop-funk-punk-cabaret … 'Afro-baroque' music" (The New York Times). Mentioned in the same breath with Kurt Weill, Burt Bacharach, and Jackie Gleason, Stew has been showered with critical accolades for his songwriting and poetry, collecting a Tony Award for his rock musical Passing Strange—made into a 2009 film by Spike Lee. Stew will visit in the fall and collect material to create a collection of songs about Iowa City commissioned by Hancher. The songs will be premiered at the concert.
