Winard Harper Sextet

City High School, Opstad Auditorium
Winard Harper—master of both the drum kit and West African balafon—plays well with others. “One of my fortes,” he says “is that I play well with people, and in doing so bring out the best of people I play with. I like to give everybody a chance to shine.” Surrounding himself with fierce young talent that can blow the roof off the room, Harper delivers a jazz explosion, but he shouldn’t be mistaken for a guy who merely pounds the skins. His is a sound full of textures and colors. As All About Jazz reports, he is “so mind-bogglingly dexterous…as to be truly awe-inspiring.”
