These members have worked hard in many ways, often receiving little or no recognition other than the annual STAR awards for a special activity that year. We want you to know who they are and what they have done. We would also welcome any nominations you may have to honor such members.
Dianna Penny
Our first honoree is Dianna Penny. Although she is not behind the scenes as a dedicated Showcase clerk, many of her Hancher hours have taken place elsewhere. Dianna has been a member of Hancher Guild since its earliest days and was one of the first to work at the original Showcase, then situated on the east side of the Hancher lobby. She has volunteered for special events on many occasions over the years. She has helped with registering children for the Cinderella ballet, dressed as Snow White for a lobby celebration party, and she always offers her services wherever needed.
Not to be overlooked is Dianna's culinary talent. No Hancher Guild potluck would be complete without one of her fabulous apple pies. In fact, many members start with the dessert table, to be certain they will get a slice. On some occasions Dianna has even brought two pies, still not enough to satisfy everyone.
But perhaps Dianna's most valued service to the Guild has been as secretary to the board. Elected to the position a few years ago, it quickly became obvious that the job was hers as long as she wanted it. Dianna is one of a shrinking list of people who know shorthand! As a result, her minutes of Board meetings are complete, concise and well-written. Nothing is omitted.
In addition to Hancher activities Dianna sings in the University Music School's Camerata Choir, has performed in many University operas as a supernumerary, and is very active in her church. She is a secretary in the cardio-vascular unit of the Internal Medicine Department at University Hospital. As a minister's child she grew up in many mid-western cities, but finally came to Iowa City where she received a B.A. in art at the university. She plays piano and organ and is a published poet.
Next time you see Dianna, congratulate her for being the first of the Guild's Unsung Heroes. We couldn't do without her.
