Dance has had a toehold in Iowa City for more than four decades, thanks to a groundbreaking Hancher/Joffrey Ballet pas de deux through the University of Iowa. Just 25 miles away, though, in Cedar Rapids, building an audience for dance has always and continues to require a leap of faith by those wanting to sell not just seats, but an appreciation for the art.

Inti-Illimani will perform Friday night on the Pedestrian Mall Fountain Stage, located outside the Sheraton Hotel. The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m., although people typically begin setting up lawn chairs around 6 p.m. Inti-Illimani is a Latin American music ensemble that focuses on indie and folk music, with baroque influences.

West Middle School students are contributing their artistic talents — as well as their visages — to the University of Iowa's new Hancher Auditorium. A piece created by seventh graders from seven communities across Iowa will be on permanent display in the new Hancher, expected to be completed in the fall of 2016.

On Thursday, April 30, seventh graders from Algona Middle School had a chance to begin contributions to artwork to be hung in the newly constructed Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Algona was one of seven communities from across the state chosen to contribute to this art project. The other six communities are Storm Lake, Spencer, Iowa City, Maquoketa, Council Bluffs and Muscatine.
